Why Managed IT Is Vital for Attorneys

Every law firm runs on privileged, confidential information. Protecting that information is not a nice-to-have. It is part of the job.

The difference today, compared to a few years back, is that a majority of our information lives on computers, in email inboxes, SaaS applications and in the cloud. That is why managed IT has become an important decision that a modern practice makes.

Law Firms Are a Target

South African law firms have been targets of cybercriminals for some time, according to indemnity fund statistics reported in De Rebus. The legal sector holds information criminals want.

The most common attack is simple. A fraudster compromises or imitates an email account, then sends through banking details for a payment the firm is expecting to make. The money goes to the criminal instead of the intended recipient. This is known as business email compromise, and it has cost South African firms dearly. Ransomware, where your files are locked until you pay, is the other big threat.

Cybersecurity is a business and legal risk, not just a compliance box to tick for insurance purposes.

The Problem With Going It Alone

Lawyers are experts in the law, not in IT. You did not train for years to spend your evenings and mornings worrying about firewalls, patching, anti-virus and backup schedules.

Many firms lean on one person who is “good with computers,” or they only call someone when something breaks. That leaves real gaps. Nobody is monitoring your systems day to day. Nobody is making sure your backups actually work. Nobody is keeping your software patched against the latest threats. And crucially, nobody is thinking ahead.

It is also worth knowing that cyber liability is generally excluded from the standard attorneys’ indemnity cover in South Africa. In other words, if a cyber incident hits your firm, you may well be on your own for it. That makes prevention far more valuable than cure.

What Managed IT Actually Does for a Firm

Managed IT turns reaction into proactive prevention. For a law firm, that means a few specific things matter most.

(i) Your data is protected properly, with encryption, secure access, and layered security rather than hoping for the best; (ii) Your systems are monitored around the clock, so problems get caught before they turn into downtime during a court deadline or a big transaction; and (iii) Your backups are tested, so if the worst happens you can actually recover. And your setup is built to support your obligations to your client and the Legal Practice Council (LPC).

You also get predictable costs, and someone who plans your technology around how your firm works. If you want the fuller picture on the difference between this and the old break-fix approach, I wrote about that separately: Managed IT vs. Ad-Hoc IT Support: Which Is Right for Your Business?

Why Do I Care?

Before I moved into IT, I practiced as an attorney. I understand the duty of confidentiality, the weight of client trust, and the compliance pressure that comes with running a practice. I know what is at stake when a firm’s data is exposed, because I have sat on your side of the desk.

That is the gap I set out to fill with Bridgelytic. Not just an IT provider who can keep your systems running, but one who understands why it matters to a legal practice specifically. You get someone who speaks both languages, based right here and available when you need them, without the call centre run-around.

If you run a practice in Ballito or surrounds and you are not confident your IT is protecting you the way it should: let’s chat.
