Most businesses only think about their IT when it stops working. The internet goes down, a laptop won’t boot, or the email server falls over, and suddenly it is all hands on deck. You call someone, you wait, you pay for the fix, and you get back to work. Then you forget about it until the next time.
That is ad-hoc support. It is how a lot of small businesses handle their IT, and for some of them it works fine. But it is not the only option, and it is worth understanding the difference before you decide what is right for you.
What Is Ad-Hoc (Break-Fix) Support?
Ad-hoc support, sometimes called break-fix, is exactly what it sounds like. Something breaks, and you call someone to fix it. You pay per job, for parts and labour, and once it is sorted the relationship ends until the next problem.
There is nothing wrong with this in principle. If your business barely relies on technology, or you only have a handful of devices and no critical systems, paying only when you need help can make sense.
The catch is that break-fix is reactive by design. Nobody is watching your systems between call-outs, and nobody has any reason to stop the same problem happening again. You are always dealing with the issue after it has already cost you time and money.
What Is Managed IT?
Managed IT flips the model around. Instead of waiting for things to break, your provider monitors and maintains your systems on an ongoing basis, for a predictable monthly fee. The idea is to catch and prevent problems before they turn into downtime.
That usually means continuous monitoring, regular updates and patching, security management, and a provider who actually knows your setup and has a stake in keeping it healthy. Because you are paying a flat fee rather than per-incident, your IT costs become predictable instead of a nasty surprise every time something goes wrong.
Proactive vs Reactive
Ad-hoc support waits for problems. Managed IT works to prevent them.
With proactive monitoring, a lot of issues get spotted and dealt with before you even notice them. Industry figures suggest well-run monitoring can catch a large share of problems before users are affected, and response times under a managed agreement are typically far quicker than waiting for an available technician. When your systems are being looked after continuously, the small issues get handled before they grow into the expensive ones.
There is also the question of who carries the risk. With break-fix, that risk sits entirely with you. With managed IT, your provider shares it, because keeping your systems running is the whole point of the arrangement.
Which Is Right for Your Business?
It depends on how much your business relies on its IT.
If you are a very small operation with minimal systems and you can happily carry on if something is down for a day, ad-hoc support might be all you need. There is no point paying for a managed service you will not use.
But if your business depends on its systems to make money, serve customers, or stay compliant, then reacting to problems after they happen is an expensive way to operate. The cost of downtime, lost work, and repeated issues usually outweighs the monthly fee of a managed service.
Where Bridgelytic Fits
I work with SMME businesses and regulated professionals in Ballito and surrounds who rely on their IT and want it looked after properly. That means managed, hands-on support with one point of contact who knows your business, not a queue and a stranger every time something goes wrong.
If you are not sure which model fits you, that is worth a conversation. I would rather help you work out what you actually need than sell you something you don’t.

One response to “Managed IT vs. Ad-Hoc IT Support: Which Is Right for Your Business?”
[…] If a few of these sound familiar, your business has probably outgrown reactive, ad-hoc support. The usual next step is moving to a managed model, where your systems are looked after continuously rather than fixed only when they fail. I wrote a separate post breaking down the difference between the two, which is worth a read if you are weighing it up: Managed IT vs. Ad-Hoc IT Support: Which Is Right for Your Business? […]
